The sun is at the center of our solar system. It was formed 4.6 billion years ago together with the other large bodies of the solar system from a rotating, slowly condensing disk of gas and dust. The Sun is an average star in terms of size and luminosity, with a lifespan of several billion years.

The massive amounts of energy generated by nuclear fusion in the sun and constantly radiated form the basis for almost all forms of life on earth. To this day, many physical phenomena observed on the sun are still not fully understood - and no other celestial body influences our everyday life as much as the sun. The description alone of the religious aspects of solar observation handed down through thousands of years of human history fills volumes.

Today we are probably observing the sun even more intensively than our ancestors: solar space probes like SOHO send data to earth around the clock, and even in modern times this can still trigger hectic measures. For example, when there is considerable interference with electronic equipment on earth satellites and on the ground as a result of strong explosions on the sun.

This poster, which was created in collaboration with Prof. Schwenn from the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research, summarizes the most important things about our star.
