Item Description:
Venus is the second planet in the solar system after Mercury. Its orbit around the Sun is the most circular of all planets. After the sun and moon, Venus is the brightest object in the sky, historically often referred to as the "evening star" or "morning star."
Because Venus is relatively close to the Sun, Venus phases similar to those of the Moon can be observed from Earth. They were already recognized by Galileo Galilei and were an important reference point for the heliocentric worldview developed by Copernicus.
For a long time it was believed that Venus is a kind of sister planet of the Earth, which is true in some points: Venus is only slightly smaller than Earth (95% of the Earth's diameter). There are very few impact craters on Venus and Earth, indicating a relatively young crust. In addition, the chemical composition of both planets is similar.
Therefore, they even suspected the existence of life under the thick clouds of Venus. However, more recent scientific evidence has shown that there is a hostile atmosphere on Venus. The surface pressure is 90 atm, which is roughly equivalent to pressure per 1 km of ocean depth.
Clouds several kilometers thick are composed of sulfuric acid; the dense atmosphere creates a greenhouse effect, causing the temperature to rise to almost 500 ° C. Wind speeds up to 350 km / h. Unlike Earth, Venus also has no magnetic field, and the Moon is not yet known.
This poster shows all the most important about our neighboring planet, including the landscapes of Venus, modeled on the basis of NASA radar data.
